The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone drops 1,000 feet from the rim to the river. Many inspiring views of the 20 mile long canyon are afforded along loop trails. Hot water acting on volcanic rock created the canyon's colors. The Minnetaree Indians named the river Mi tsi a-da-zi for the yellow cliffs. At the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers the French trappers translated the name to rouche jaune, Yellowstone.
