The Lower Falls plunge 308 feet into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Minnetaree Indians named the river Mitsi-a-da-zi, translated to Yellowstone, because of the yellow rock found on the banks of the confluence with the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers.
